Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)

3 Years / 6 Semesters Graduation in any discipline BCI Approved

Introduction

This curriculum implements the Bar Council of India's revised rules of legal education (BCI Resolution No. 110/2008 dated 14th September 2008), prescribing 20 compulsory papers, 4 clinical papers, and 6 optional papers to be chosen from a prescribed list, along with one compulsory paper in English. It has since been further revised to incorporate the three newly enacted criminal laws – the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023 – pursuant to the BCI resolution dated 20th May 2024. The revised curriculum stands approved by the Board of Studies, Maharaja Suhel Dev State University (MSDSU), Azamgarh, in its meeting held on 4th September 2024, and is effective from the 2024–25 session.

The LL.B. Degree course is spread over three academic years, divided into six semesters (First to Sixth). Examinations for the odd semesters (I, III, V) are held in December, and for the even semesters (II, IV, VI) in May. As prescribed by the Bar Council of India, the LL.B. curriculum follows a marks-based evaluation scheme rather than a numeric credit-point system – each paper carries the maximum and minimum marks shown below.

Course Objectives & Outcomes

The BCI-prescribed curriculum does not state a single set of objectives for the LL.B. programme as a whole – each paper carries its own subject-specific objectives within the syllabus. Two representative examples, quoted directly from the syllabus, are given below; unit-wise objectives for every paper are available in the full syllabus document.

V Semester – Labour Law I (Objectives): Labour is one of the principal factors of production in all kinds of establishment whether organized or unorganized, industrial or commercial. With a view to ensure job security and satisfaction to the labour, the course imparts safeguards for prevention of exploitation of labour by the employers. Several legislations have been made covering a number of aspects of labour welfare. The course realizes that a fundamental knowledge of important labour laws is thus a basic requirement of every entrepreneur, manager and worker.

VI Semester – Labour Law II (Programme Outcome/Objectives): In this era of industrialization, in addition to remuneration for workers the much needed are social security, social welfare, health and safety measures. The in-depth knowledge of labour laws is a sine qua non for business administration and personnel management as it sharpens the managerial excellence and enables to come to right decisions at the appropriate time. This course curriculum has been designed keeping in mind the demand of present scenario, educating students about social security, social welfare, health and safety measures in addition to the provisions of wages and remuneration under different labour legislations.
